With These Hands

Alessandro Di Giulio has been a champion of my percussion music in Italy. In fact, a student of mine at Carleton actually, by freak coincidence, saw him perform Concertpop at Rome’s NoGo Festival while he was abroad. I felt good about that, and played it off like OF COURSE I get international performances of my stuff all the time. Heh.

When Ale contacted me to ask if I had any duo music for piano and percussion, I said something like “not yet,” and so began our work together. I’m happy to announce that With These Hands is in progress. Two musicians, somewhat variable instrumentation and their voices. Text, that I am writing, in Italian and English, often at the same time, sometimes in translation, sometimes divergent. It’s been a joy to work on. I hope to be there for a premiere someday, maybe with the whole family in tow?
